First Half |

1. Plucked Instrument Group |
Plucked instruments are an instrument family that are key to Chinese classical music, featuring many instruments that are partially or primarily plucked. CMENY’s plucked instrument group includes Yangqin, Liuqin, Pipa, Zhongrun, Daruan, and cello, which provides the ensemble a wide and powerful range of tones.

  1. Spring of the Heavenly Mountain |
[Composers: Usman Jiang and Lichun Yu|
This piece was originally a solo piece for the rawap composed by Usman Jiang and Lichun Yu. The rawap, also known as rubob, is a plucked string instrument from Central Asia and is commonly used in Uyghur, Uzbek, Kyrgyz, Tajik, and Afghan folk music. The piece features distinctive Uyghur folk melodies, characterized by a strong singing quality, depicting the beautiful and delightful scenery of spring in the Tian Shan Mountains. The music shifts from a darker and more sombre minor tonality in the first section to a bright and lively major tonality, with melodies that reflect the folk dances of Xinjiang. This piece showcases the diversity and cultural importance of the music CMENY’s mission is to share with audiences in New York.

This piece was created by Danhong Wang and was originally composed for an ensemble of ten guzheng, a type of zither instrument popular in Chinese music. It was later adapted for an ensemble of plucked string instrumentalists. The music is light and lively and utilizes innovative harmonic language stemming from popular music. It showcases an elegant and spirited nature, utilizing complex and intricate rhythms to amplify the elegance of the piece and the playing style. Listen to the intricacies of the piece and let it wash over you.
2. Erhu Group |
"Nocturnal Evening" was composed by Mr. Tianhua Liu on New Year's Eve in 1928. The melody of the piece is light and cheerful, warm and simple, filled with the festive atmosphere and cultural sentiments of traditional Chinese festivals. Its style combines lyricism and narrative, including the delicate expression of emotions, showcasing the implicit and elegant aesthetic qualities of traditional Chinese music.

2.2. Folk Tune from Sunan | 蘇南小曲 [Composer: Chang-Yao Zhu | 朱昌耀]
Composed by Chang-Yao Zhu, this is an erhu ensemble piece adapted from the folk tune "Lao Huang Diao", a popular tune in southern Jiangsu province’s opera. The composer uses elegant erhu techniques to amplify the intensity of the emotion and showcase the skill of the erhu.

3. Student Performances:
    3.1. Guzheng Students |

3.2. Dizi with small group accompany |
            【Composed by Zi-Cun Feng | 冯子存   ; Arranged by Yu-Yuan Xu | 徐煜源】
'Five Bangzi' is a solo piece for the bangdi (a type of Chinese bamboo flute) adapted by the flutist Feng Zicun from the northeastern Chinese two-person folk play song 'Peng Bangzi.' The original piece is beautiful, lively, and passionate, with a robust melody.
This composition retains these characteristics while employing techniques such as strokes, layered notes, and rapid tongue techniques to enhance the northern folk music style, imbuing the piece with a rough, bold, and passionate personality. As a representative piece of northern bangdi music, it showcases the integration of folk music variation techniques and instrumental expressiveness, with its rich local flavor widely appreciated by the public.
This piece of dizi music was arranged by CMENY Dizi teacher, Yu-Yuan Xu. CMENY has a long-time tradition of showcasing outstanding students in the community concert. This is to demonstrate CMENY's commitment to spread the seeds of Asian heritage music with the New York City community.

4. Small Group: 小組 De Yin (Virtuous Tune) | 德音 [Composed by Bo-Zen Li | 李博禪]
Based on an ancient Chinese text, The Book of Ritual, virtue is the essence of nature; joy is the adornment of virtue. Metal, stone, silk, and bamboo are the instruments of music. Virtue is the correctness of human nature, and joy is the brilliance of virtue. Metal, stone, silk, and bamboo are the tools of music, expressing inner aspirations. Mr. Bozhao Li, a young writer of 'De Yin', is exactly adhering to this concept in his creations. The composer attempts to depict the noble character of ancient Chinese scholar-musicians and a strong sense of romanticism.
This is a rather challenging and enticing piece of music.  CMENY would love to share this piece of music with our audience to connect you with the traditional past while challenge your expectation of what music could be.

5. Dizi Group: | 吹管:(笛子齊奏) Under the Grand Green Mountain 大青山下
[Composed by Zeng Li | 李鎮; Arranged by Yu-Yuan Xu | 徐煜源]
The piece is based on the duet-style theatrical music popular in the western region of Inner Mongolia, combining the dazzling decorative techniques and emotional expressiveness of the new-style flute music, along with the exaggerated embellishments of the unique left and right hand finger technique in the duet-style flute playing, advancing layer by layer into a cohesive whole.
The dizi performers are students of Teacher Xu, who have been learning Dizi with Techer Xu since they were 8 or 12 years old. The musician members of CMENY have been devoting their energy to teach and coach young music enthusiasts and transmitting the cultural heritage through music to the younger generation here in New York. With consistency and dedication, anyone can be a solo performer on stage like these three dizi soloists.

Second Half |
6. Celebration Overture | 慶典序曲 [Composed by Ji-Ping Zhao | 趙季平]
The concert opened with the "Celebration Overture," a prelude to the festival. The piece, with its lively and rapid movements and the chorus of suona, gongs, and drums, evokes a festive and exhilarating atmosphere. In the middle section, a cantabile adagio depicts a peaceful and prosperous atmosphere. The recapitulation brings the festive atmosphere to a climax, concluding the piece on a jubilant note.

7. Beautiful Bambusa Bamboo | 美麗的鳳尾竹 [Composed by Chun-Lin Yang | 楊春林]
This piece of music uses the local colors of Yunnan as its subject matter, depicting the Bambusa Bamboo swaying in the wind, like a graceful young girl dancing lightly.
This piece usually performs by one bawu, with a few individual accent phrases accompanied by Guzheng, Sheng, and supported by gentle string instruments.
In this concert, CMENY utilizes one bawu and two huluxi to enhance the interplay between the waving Bambusa bamboo and the birds swaying around them.

8. Chinese Sights and Sounds: Purple Bamboo Tune and The Little Cowherd | 炎黃風情(紫竹調, 小放牛)[Composed by Yuan-Kai Bao | 鲍元恺]

The following pieces are selected from a well-adorned contemporary suite of symphonic orchestrations composed by Mr. Yuan-Kai Bao. This suite contains 24 Chinese orchestral pieces on folk song themes.  The folk song themes are selected from different regions which represent a rich and diverse musical tradition across different of China.
The selection of these two pieces also reflects the mission of CMENY in preserving and sharing the traditional tunes, however, representing them with a more contemporary composition structure and bringing the orchestra toward a more open and diverse modern cultural trend.
The two pieces that CMENY will be presenting in this concert are:
Purple Bamboo Tune:
The theme comes from a tune in Shanghai opera typical for the southern Yangtze region. The melody is played by erhu, pipa and qudi, accompanied by the crystal arpeggios of the harp. By means of the fixed-bass variation techniques in Baroque music and the heterophonic texture used in southern Yangtze musical instruments, the piece seamlessly weaves the song "Lao Liuban" originally from the southern Yangtze region, melodies and transitions from Suzhou pingtan, as well as tunes from Kunqu opera into the accompaniment part of “Black-Bamboo Tune”. Listen for the
The Little Cowherd
This popular song-and-dance tune had been adapted many times for Peking Opera and other regional operas as a historical primer. In the early morning, the little cowherd was playing the bamboo flute leisurely on the cow’s back when a village girl asked him for directions. As a condition for guiding the way, the boy requested her to answer a series of questions, such as "Who built the stone bridge in Zhaozhou?” and “Who left the jade railings?" The two of them alternately asked and replied over singing and dancing. At the Chinese opera’s free-slow-moderate-quick tempo step by step, the full orchestra brings the joyous atmosphere to a climax at the end.

9. Elegy of the Could Dresses | 雲裳訴(箏協奏曲)[Composed by Yi-Guo Zhou | 周煜國]
The title of "Elegy of the Cloud Dresses" is derived from the poetic line "Clouds evoke clothing, flowers evoke beauty" in Li Bai's "Qing Ping Diao Ci". It is based on Bai Juyi's "Song of Everlasting Sorrow" and describes the tragic romance between Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and consort Yang Guifei. The piece cleverly integrates the tonal characteristics of Shaanxi Qin Opera music, particularly the "Bowl Bowl Tune" and "Crying Tune", while also drawing on the melodic scales of Shaanxi opera's "Joyful Sound" and "Bitter Sound". The musical language is rich, the regional style is distinct, and the cultural background is profound. This piece is a representative work in the development of the Chinese guzheng concerto, and showcases the shift of guzheng music towards full polyphonic concertos. The piece is filled with emotional and dramatic moments, intricately depicting the beauty of love, the fear of war, and the pain of parting in life and death, along with deep longing, making it very captivating and narrative. This guzheng concerto is performed by guzheng artist Wei Sun.
