The Chinese Music Ensemble of New York (CMENY) has launched a new education program. We are now offering 60-min private lessons online. All the sessions are instructed by CMENY’s senior musicians, either in English or Mandarin (unless stated otherwise). The class will be scheduled based on your availability, and is $60 per class.

Hagen-Fan, Chen - Pipa
Originally from Shanghai China, Chen Hagen is a decorated Pipa and jazz musician. She studied Pipa, jazz piano, and jazz electric bass at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. She continued her study at NYU Steinhardt, and has received an MA in Music Education. Chen performed in China and abroad in an All Girl Jazz Band, and also received professional recognition for her work in Chinese traditional music. Chen is deeply committed to sharing her work with young people, presenting workshops and special classes in Piano lessons, Chinese music and Asian arts in public and private schools. She specializes in comparing practices and traditions in the Arts between East and West. She has performed live stageworks and in concert, improvising with the Piano and Pipa using technology and multimedia. She also has pursued dance improvisations as lived art, embodying her experiences and Chinese elements through expressive performance. She is passionate about performance as an interpretation of the free play between reality and the imagination. |
Sun, Wei - Guzheng
Wei Sun is a young Guzheng Artist based in NYC. Born in a family of artists, she is also a national certified senior teacher of Guzheng, a member of China National Instrumental Association and a member of the International Guzheng Association. In addition to Wei’s rich performance background, she graduated from the Department of Music of Communication University of China, and the University of China Guzheng College for Master. She came to the United States as a guzheng performer and guzheng teacher at the CBA Cultural and Art Center in 2016. Wei has been invited to perform at the Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall ,Times Square. United Nations, Columbia University, Merkin Concert Hall, Queens College Art Center, New Jersey Performing Arts, Brooklyn Center For The Performing Arts, and other famous concert halls. |
Yang, Feifei - Erhu
Feifei Yang is a virtuoso on the Erhu and Banhu, two Chinese stringed instruments, as well as a vocalist. In China, her talents have been recognized by a Gold Medal at the Beijing National New Talent Competition. She is a dual 2017 Global Music Award Winner - Female Vocalist & Popular Music. In New York, her new hometown, Feifei was assistant director and soloist in the Chinese entertainment segment of the 2017 Times Square New Year’s Eve Countdown. She has also performed in such legendary settings as Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Barclays Center, the United Nations, CBS, WNBC and New York Fashion Week. She has performed for the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon, the Rockefeller’s, Steve Forbes, and she was very honored to perform for the Chinese President and the First Lady in Abu Dhabi during the China state visit to UAE in 2018. Feifei’s service to New York’s musical and cultural life has been recognized and honored in numerous citations by the New York State Assembly. As a performer, Feifei has released several singles and albums, including Dance of the Strings (composer and performer on acoustic and electric Erhu); Vermillion Bird (Erhu); Mother (Vocal), and Gu•Ran (Erhu). Her award-winning performance in “Tug of War,” her 2017 pop music video debut, showcased her talents as an actress as well as a singer and Erhu master; the song combines Chinese Erhu and American pop into a unique blend of Chinese and Western music, art and style. |
Wang, Yang - Erhu
Yang Wang, an erhu prodigy, started his musical journey at age 7. Over his years of systematic music education, Yang attended Xi'an Conservatory of Music for college and got his masters in New York University. Soloist in Chinese music ensemble of New York and New York Chinese culture center. In 2013, Yang successfully held a recital where he showcased traditional and contemporary numbers with outstanding erhu techniques in Xi'an Concert Hall. Yang has performed at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York fashion week, Philadelphia Museum of art, and the Chinese National Center for Performing Arts. While playing traditional music for the Chinese community in the U.S., Yang is also doing workshops in museums and schools to introduce Chinese music to more people. Now he is also in an electronic band THE EITHER, creating more possibilities with the ancient instrument. |
